Here are both sides with the finished artwork before clearing.
After every thing is looked over, washed down and cleaned with PPG 330, the parts are ready for the final clearing. The parts will get at least 4 more coats of a high solids clear. Once the clear has dried, all the parts will be wet sanded again using 1500 grit, then gone over with 2000 grit. This knocks down the clear so there are no orange peels or any imperfections. Once this is done (hours later), we use a rubbing compound, then a micro-finishing compound. The parts are washed with soapy water, blown dry, and 3M Hand Glaze applied. We estimate there are at least 12 hours involved
from the time we spray the final clear, to the final glass finish.
So...there you have it. Although this little tutorial doesn’t come close to
actually explaining all the hours involved, it will however show you that
we as custom painters have a lot of time invested in our work.
